The Union of Northern Workers has joined the PSAC in a federal lobby campaign to shore up retirement security for all Canadians. There is concern about inaccurate statements and suggestions recently made by the CD Howe Institute and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. The PSAC is working to educate members and the public about pension plans and retirement security for Canadians.
For more information visit the PSAC web page or watch the short video presentation that has been prepared on this topic.
The UNW makes use of a strategic planning system. Once a year, the entire Executive gather to develop a set of goals for the Union and a plan to meet those goals. Having such a blueprint allows the Union to move consistently forward to meet its goals.
For example, the Executive wanted to grow the UNW. Through a series of actions the UNW has added seven new employee groups in just 3 years.
Recently, through the Collective Bargaining, UNW members employed by the GNWT, saw the achievement of a long held goal Donny Days are now no longer mandatory days of unpaid leave. Members still take the time off work BUT they get paid for those days.
The Canadian Labour Congress will be hosting a national Human Rights Conference -
"Rise up for your Rights" - from December 8 - 11, 2010 in Ottawa. It is a timely event, given the current government's widespread attack on human rights. From challenging pay equity and employment equity in the federal public service to cuts and closures in institutions such as the Canadian Human Rights Commission, Status of Women, Rights & Democracy, the Court Challenges program and a host of others, this government is bent on dismantling fundamental human rights as we have come to know them.
Please consider sending a representative complement from your Component to this
important conference - ensuring that each equity group is sufficiently represented is an important first step in challenging the status quo.
Who should attend?
This is an activist conference for workers who recognize and are determined to change what Conservative policies mean for Aboriginal and racialized communities, for LGBT communities, for people living with disabilities and for women. This event is also for
alles who understand what the Conservative agenda has in store for communities who don't share their vision.
This is about taking back our future as a diverse movement and challenging the
Conservative agenda - in our workplaces, in our communities and at the ballot box.
Information about the conference and on-line registration can found here:
