This Local includes all employees working for Yellowknife Health and Social Services Authority. It includes Fort Resolution and Lutselk'e.

Annual General Meeting:
- Date: November 29th, 2010
- Here’s your chance to toss out the executive and take a stab at running the local
- The “Union” is you, get involved
- We will be electing representatives to attend the PSAC North convention in Iqaluit in June 2011
Training
- Local officer training was held September 25th with 5 members attending. We learned how the local can be effective in helping it’s members and did some strategic planning.
Communication and assistance to members
- If you are new to the organization and have not been contacted to sign a union card, please contact Sue Harrison, our membership officer or please talk to any of the executive or stewards.
- Returning to work early following an injury or needing an accommodation of any kind to be able to do your job? Contact Allison Andrews, both the union and management need to be involved in negotiating necessary changes to the workplace. Allison has completed a course on the necessary process and she can help you.
- Do you have a health and safety issue in your work site? Be sure to approach you supervisor for resolution. If the matter cannot be quickly resolved, please contact your OHS representative or Anneka Westergreen, co-chair of the OHS committee.
Activities
- Your local is active in supporting Social Justice locally, nationally and internationally. Contact your executive if you have a worthy cause needing support. Our local is approaching some of the NGO’s that our organization works with to see if there are items that they need
- A rocking chair was donated to the Yellowknife Primary Care Clinic. The chair will be used by the public health staff in their clinics.
- Let your executive know if members need assistance in any way
Joint Consultation Committee (monthly meeting between Local 33 and management)
- Scheduling, equitable distribution of overtime and vacation leave have been discussed
Job descriptions of Local 33 Executive members.
- President: runs the local with the help of the executive and stewards, ensures funds are spent in support of the local and the union movement as a whole, ensures necessary training is done, is the spokesperson for the local, co-chairs Joint Consultation committee
- Vice-president: runs the local in the absence of the president, organizes training, provides orientation of new members, participate in Joint Consultation process
- Secretary: records minutes, distributes minutes and other communication, maintains a filing system
- Treasurer: tends the money, files reports quarterly to the UNW main office
- Chief Shop Steward: coordinate activities of the stewards, ensures appropriate training is available for new stewards, assists members and ensure collective agreement is applied correctly, participate in Joint Consultation process, work with service officers and stewards and president to file grievances as needed
- Membership officer: sign up new members, provide 1:1 orientation to new members
The local executive members work as a team, delegate appropriately and have a genuine interest in the welfare of all members of the local and the wider union movement.
Think about it and come out on November 29th to be part of the business of your local

- A donation is in the works; a glider rocker to the Yellowknife Primary Care Clinic. The chair will be used by the public health staff in their clinics.
- A donation to the Yellowknife junior golf program was made
- Strategic planning will take place with the UNW 1st Vice President Gayla Thunstrom. The plan will help guide the local into the future. Anyone interested in being involved in this planning, contact Heather
- Support for the NWT Federation of Labour BBQ to be held Sept 6th
- The Pride event held 13th of August was supported by our local
- Heather has been selected to attend the PSAC National Women’s conference in Ottawa in October

- At our May meeting, we supported a donation of $250.00 to the YWCA transition housing program for heat.
Joint Consultation Committee (monthly meeting between Local 33 and management)
- At the May 17th meeting, it was agreed that staff on standby(social workers and nurses in health centres), who have been called in during the night, can approach their supervisor and ask to have a reasonable amount of rest time the following day if they need it. No charge to leave credits is needed, nothing is entered on People soft. Ruth Robertson CEO has agreed to inform all supervisors and managers of this agreement. Human Resources is attempting to standardize this agreement territorial wide.
- The issue of LPN staffing in Clinic services was raised, the concern being workload and getting behind with paperwork, bookings etc. The CEO sent a detailed response about LPN staffing, you can ask your executive for details of the response. There are 7 funded and 2 unfunded LPN positions and until the new clinic structure has been in operation for a period of time, the two vacant LPN positions will be filled with terms and casuals.
